Synopsis

At first glance, Toko (Kaho) leads an enviable life, having attained everything society has taught her she should want to be happy – a successful husband, an adorable daughter, a luxurious home. But beneath the veneer of her picture-perfect life, Toko harbours a feeling of emptiness. Then, a chance encounter with a former lover, Kurata (TSUMABUKI Satoshi), awakens a deep longing in her and she throws herself into an intense and passionate affair, while also taking steps to regain her independence as a woman by starting to work again. Toko is set on this new path of self-rediscovery but Kurata is hiding a secret that could prove their undoing.

Director of Dear Etranger (screened as part of JFTFP19 with a special appearance), MISHIMA Yukiko returns once again with a contemplative portrait of female self-assertion against social restraints and expectations imposed by traditional gender roles. Adapted from Naoki Prize-winning novel by Rio Shimamoto.
